United States Marines waged a protracted and vicious 36-day battle against entrenched Japanese forces in order to capture the volcanic Island of Iwo-Jima. Iwo-Jima was a Japanese Army base that held two strategic airfields, which would prove vital for US operations against Japan in the Pacific Theater of World War 2.
